'Green Travel'

Traffic growth presents us with some very serious problems and challenges for the future. There are 26 million motor vehicles in Britain right now, and traffic is expected to grow by a staggering 60% in the next 30 years. Worryingly, traffic levels on rural roads are set to rise more quickly than in urban areas and could even treble in some places.

Friends of the Peak District believes that any growth in traffic will cause serious problems for rural areas. Traffic noise spoils the tranquility of the countryside and starry skies are masked by the orange glow of sodium lights. Road verges are cut back, winding country lanes straightened, and wooden signposts replaced with unsightly direction signs. Road traffic lessens the enjoyment of the countryside for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, many of whom feel threatened or intimidated by motor vehicles.

Cut your car use

We are asking everybody to think about using their car more wisely. You can cut the number of car journeys you make by using public transport when possible and cycling or walking short journeys or on the school run. Consider car sharing with a colleague or friend when making regular journeys, and drive at slower speeds to lessen your fuel consumption.
