Planning Advice

The Peak District is subject to numerous planning applications every year, concerning everything from quarrying, housing and employment developments, conversions of buildings, renewable energy schemes (including wind turbines) and leisure developments.

The Friends' Planning Officer and our dedicated and experienced team of Planning Volunteers scrutinise every application submitted for the Peak District National Park, the Derbyshire High Peak and the six parishes of North East Derbyshire (Eckington, Unstone, Holmesfield, Killamarsh, Dronfield, Barlow) and raise the alarm when the countryside is threatened.

Using the Planning System

Friends of the Peak District works closely with local people to press for planning decisions to protect the countryside, promote urban regeneration and contribute to protecting and improving your local environment and community.

New proposals to reform the Planning System – Deadline Looms!

Following the controversial report by economist Kate Barker, the Government intends to publish a White Paper on proposals to reform the planning system in Spring 2007. The Barker report contains some disturbing recommendations which would reduce the effectiveness of planning as a environmental tool. It suggested there should be a presumption in favour of development, questioned the role of Green Belts in controlling urban sprawl, and proposed the creation of an independent Planning Commission to take decisions on major infrastructure projects. We are campaigning, in partnership with others, to make sure the Government's Planning White Paper and subsequent legislation safeguards the ability of planning to protect the countryside and promote sustainable development – visit the Planning Disaster website to see how you can help.
