The Competition has proved to be one of the organisation’s key success stories, providing hundreds of beautiful images of the Peak District which help to illustrate Peakland Guardian magazine, campaign leaflets and the all important website.
This year professional Peak District photographers Karen Frenkel and Jerry Rawson were joined on the judging panel by renowned photographer Paul Hill MBE. They all agreed that the quality of entries had continued to rise, even on the wonderful achievements last year.
The theme of this year’s Photographic Competition, Life in the Peak, was interpreted in a myriad of ways with Geoff Buxton's striking shot ‘Chatsworth Sunset Silhouette’ (left) being chosen as the panel’s winning entry for 2008.
Paul Hill remarked, We were impressed by the dramatic silhouette that shows an aspect of life in the countryside which is seldom seen - it’s not all ramblers and sheep in the Peak District! Geoff's picture has a great deal of impact from a very simple shot, producing a striking image that captures the soft calm of a summer's evening beautifully.
Impressive runners up were Stephen Elliott’s ‘Stone Low’ and Richard Cooper’s ‘The Great Ridge’.
Commendations were also awarded to:
- Chris Banks: ‘Water Vole’ (Cromford Canal)
- Geoff Buxton: ‘Full Blast’ (Castleton Garland Ceremony)
- Ian Cassidy: ‘It's Just Like Switzerland’ (Stanage Edge)
- Rod Egglestone: ‘Red Grouse, Stanedge’
- Stephen Elliott: ‘Carhead Rocks’ and ‘Last Light on Ladybower’
- Victor Gibbons: ‘Climbers on Windgather Rocks’
- Tez Marsden: ‘Stanton Lees in the Mist'
- Jon Nicholson (age 16): ‘Study of Cow in Barn’ (Pilsley)
