THE PAST AT RISKA Friends of the Peak District talk in Sheffield next Tuesday (Feb 13) will hear that over 100 nationally important archaeological sites and landscapes in Derbyshire are officially ‘at risk’ from damage, decay or loss. English Heritage’s regional Inspector of Ancient Monuments, Jon Humble, will be outlining the results and implications of the recent study: Scheduled Monuments at Risk, to an audience at St Thomas’ Church Hall, Crookes. The talk starts at 7.30pm. Although protected by law, scheduled monuments are vulnerable to a wide range of human activities and natural processes. Within Derbyshire, agriculture, decay and neglect, unsuitable new development and the recreational use of the landscape are the main threats which are putting monuments at risk. Jon Humble said: We have a responsibility to pass on these monuments to future generations in good condition – but this is a responsibility that must be shared by all of us. Unfortunately the financial resources of English Heritage alone can solve only a small fraction of the problems. No monuments that are protected by law in the public interest should be at high risk of further deterioration, loss or damage.
