Towns

The Peak District isn’t just about rolling hills and scenic footpaths—it’s also home to a collection of charming towns and villages that are full of character. Whether you’re looking for a cosy base, a bite to eat, or a bit of local history, these towns are well worth exploring.

Why Visit the Towns of the Peak District?

Each town in the Peak District has its own unique flavour. Some are historic market towns with cobbled streets and weekly farmers’ markets; others are picture-postcard villages with stone cottages, babbling brooks, and tea rooms aplenty. They make perfect starting points for walks, or lovely places to wind down after a day outdoors.

Top Towns & Villages to Explore

1. Bakewell
Famous for its pudding (not tart!), Bakewell is a must-visit. Nestled on the River Wye, it offers a lively market, riverside walks, and plenty of cafes and shops. It’s also close to Chatsworth House and the Monsal Trail.

2. Castleton
Set in the Hope Valley and surrounded by steep hills, Castleton is a favourite among walkers and history lovers. It’s home to Peveril Castle, several show caves (like Blue John Cavern), and lies at the foot of Mam Tor. A great base for walks and pub stops.

3. Hathersage
A bustling village with strong literary ties—Charlotte Brontë based part of Jane Eyre here. Hathersage is close to Stanage Edge and is a popular spot for climbing, walking, and outdoor gear shopping. It also has an outdoor heated swimming pool in summer!

4. Buxton
A spa town with Georgian and Victorian architecture, Buxton is full of charm. Visit the Pavilion Gardens, the Opera House, and sample the famous mineral water. It’s a bit more urban than other spots, but still very much part of the Peaks.

5. Eyam
Known as the “Plague Village,” Eyam has a fascinating history. In the 1660s, the villagers voluntarily quarantined themselves during a plague outbreak to stop it spreading. Today, you can visit the museum and historic cottages that tell this incredible story.

6. Tideswell
Dubbed the “Cathedral of the Peaks” thanks to its impressive church, Tideswell is a peaceful village with a friendly feel. There are local bakeries, good pubs, and it’s close to several quiet walking routes.

7. Edale
A tiny village with a big reputation. Edale is the official start of the Pennine Way and a launch point for walks up Kinder Scout. It’s more of a hamlet than a town, but its importance to walkers earns it a place here.

8. Ashbourne
Often called the gateway to Dovedale, Ashbourne is a larger town with independent shops, antique centres, and a great market. The cobbled streets and historic buildings make it a lovely place to spend a day.

9. Hope
Smaller and quieter than Castleton, but right next door. Hope has a laid-back vibe, a handy train station, and access to loads of walking routes. A great alternative if Castleton feels too busy.

10. Wirksworth
A creative hub with a slightly offbeat feel. Wirksworth has art galleries, independent cafes, and an annual arts festival. It’s close to Black Rocks and the High Peak Trail.
